Chris founded Ashfield Healthcare, a UK contract sales organisation, in 1996 with his wife Samantha. Within a decade, Ashfield became the market leader and was bought by UDG Healthcare in 2000. Chris was appointed as a main board director of UDG Healthcare shortly afterwards. Under his continued leadership, Chris has taken Ashfield from strength to strength, growing and diversifying its services.


After 16 major acquisitions in as many years, Ashfield is now an international healthcare services organisation with eight areas of expertise and 5,500 staff in 20 countries. Chris is based at the Ashfield Division’s headquarters in Leicestershire, UK.

Julian joined the industry in 1982, working for Glaxo. Over a 13 year period he worked in a range of sales and marketing roles and was involved in the highly successful launch of numerous new chemical entities and two company mergers. In 1995 Julian joined Innovex (Quintiles) in a senior business development role, rapidly moving onto the UK board and heading a business unit. In 2000 he left to start his own contract sales business, In2Focus. Julian sold the company to UDG Healthcare in 2005.


Since then, he has been with Ashfield as a member of its Board of Directors. Following the acquisition of Pharmexx, Julian is now responsible for Ashfield’s contract sales, nursing and contact centre teams across Europe, Asia, Canada and Emerging Markets.

Mary Anne has over three decades of senior sales and operations experience in marketing services. Prior to her current role, she was the President and COO of Alliance Healthcare Information Services, now part of Ashfield, and was a major player in Alliance’s significant growth. Before joining Alliance, Mary Anne was a consultant to several large fulfilment companies serving pharmaceutical clients and was a senior vice-president for a Manhattan-based agency that analysed advertising for large companies.

CEO, Ashfield Healthcare Communications

Viv leads Ashfield Insight & performance and Ashfield Healthcare Communications, comprising 20 agencies and specialist service divisions providing a broad range of multichannel communications services.


Viv brings a wealth of scientific, sales and marketing, and general management experience from over 35 years in the pharmaceutical, contract research and communications industries. She joined Gardiner-Caldwell Communications in 1992, rapidly rising to leadership roles across the group. Viv has also held leadership positions on ISMPP committees, driving advocacy for this profession.


At the time that UDG Healthcare plc acquired KnowledgePoint360, now part of Ashfield Healthcare Communications, Viv had been its Managing Director for 9 years and now continues in her role also as the CEO of Ashfield Healthcare Communications. Working with the senior executive team, she is currently responsible for approximately 900 people who work within this market-leading area of expertise.

Nicola Burns

Managing Director, Ashfield Meetings & Events and Insight & Performance

Nicola is the Global Managing Director of event and communications agency, Ashfield Meetings & Events, and business analytics and insights agency Ashfield Insight & Performance. She is based in the UK and leads a team of over 350 professionals across Europe and the US.


Having spent her whole career working in, and for, the Pharmaceutical Industry her time with Ashfield spans over 12 years. During that time she has held senior leadership positions in the Ashfield Division in sales, business services, training and HR. She joined the Ashfield Meetings & Events Board as Operational Effectiveness Director in 2012. In addition to her focus on delivering performance improvement throughout the business, Nicola was instrumental in guiding the business through acquisitions and subsequent mergers. Nicola was appointed as Global Managing Director in 2013 and is also part of the Ashfield Division senior executive team.

Steve joined Ashfield Healthcare in 1999 as Finance Manager and was appointed Finance Director of Ashfield In2Focus in 2001. Today he is Finance Director for the entire Ashfield division.


Steve is a qualified accountant and has worked for prestigious blue-chip companies in a range of roles and industries within the UK Midlands area, namely Fisons, British Midland Airways, Powergen, Courtaulds and Ricoh. He was also a judge for the Leicestershire Business Awards for three years.

Andy worked for Astra Pharmaceuticals for 10 years as a Sales Representative and Regional Business Manager, before joining Ashfield in 1998.


Starting in the role of Regional Business Manager, Andy has progressed through the roles of National Sales Manager, Head of Operations, Head of Business Services, Head of Procurement and Divisional Director of Procurement.


Andy was appointed Divisional Integration Director in February 2014. A member of the Divisional Board, his responsibilities include the integration of newly acquired and existing businesses into the Ashfield Commercial & Medical Services Division, with specific responsibilities in the departments of Divisional IT Services, Facilities Management, Divisional Procurement, International Fleet Management and business integration.

Colin was appointed Managing Director of Ashfield UK in March 2015. For the past three years Colin has been working successfully as Managing Director of our MASTA business based in Leeds. During that time Colin has overseen a great improvement in the performance and the breadth of the service offering of MASTA.


MASTA (Medical Advisory Service for Travellers Abroad), was established 30 years ago and we now operate the largest network of private travel clinics in the UK.


Prior to his time with MASTA Colin was the Operations Director at Ashfield UK, a role in which he held operational responsibility for all our sales and nursing programmes, as well as managing the Business Intelligence and Marketing and Communications Departments.


Colin originally joined In2Focus as a Project Manager in 2002, before the merger with Ashfield Healthcare in 2007, prior to which he had spent 12 years working in the pharmaceutical industry for Bristol Myers Squibb and Merck Sharp and Dohme, in a variety of sales, management and marketing roles, both in the UK and overseas.

Divisional Director for Quality & Compliance

Angela Cairns is Ashfield’s Divisional Director for Quality & Compliance. She began her career in healthcare communications over 30 years ago, working within Medical & Scientific Services developing content on behalf of pharmaceutical companies across a range of disease areas.


She rapidly progressed to leadership roles, leading teams of medical writers and editorial staff and directing global client accounts. During this time, Ange developed expertise in many areas, including the quality and compliance aspects of healthcare communications.


Ange is a regular speaker and facilitator at healthcare communications and publication planning meetings and congresses, has served on several professional association boards, committees and task forces, and is an author of several papers in the publications arena, including the industry standard Good Publication Practice 3 (GPP3) Guidelines. In her current role, Ange has overall responsibility for all Quality & Compliance matters across the Ashfield division.

Mike Stout

CEO, US Commercial and Clinical Businesses

Mike Stout is the CEO of Ashfield Commercial and Clinical business units (contract sales, nursing and patient support services) in the United States. Mike joined Ashfield in February 2016 from Mylan, where he has been Vice President, Global Commercial and Sales Excellence, since 2013.


Mike joined Mylan in 2009 as Vice President of Sales Strategy and Operations for the Specialty Business. Under his leadership, the sales organization expanded from 185 employees to more than 300, the internal HQ business relocated to the East Coast and grew from three employees to more than 100 employees, and revenues increased from $200M to over $700M.


Prior to Mylan, he was vice president of sales and sales operations at Valeritas with responsibility for creating a commercial sales organization for the start-up company. He spent 18 months as part of the commercial team to secure venture capital financing for the business to launch V-Go, a disposable insulin delivery device for diabetes.


Earlier in his career, Mike spent 15 years at Sanofi as a sales representative for cardiovascular and hospital specialty sales, district sales manager, brand manager for Lantus, regional sales director, and associate vice president of sales force effectiveness.
